US Lawmakers Support Diplomacy, Benefits of JCPOA

'The World Was Safer When the JCPOA Was in Place'

Senate

“The Iran Nuclear Deal was working. It prevented war and the bomb…The best and only durable way to prevent a nuclear Iran and a catastrophic war is through diplomacy.”

Senator Ed Markey (MA)

“In the years since Trump abandoned the JCPOA, the threat of Iran developing a nuclear weapon has increased, not decreased. In order to truly advance US security interests, we should do everything we can to find a viable diplomatic solution that prevents an Iranian nuclear weapon.”

Senator Tammy Duckworth (IL)

“Donald Trump’s unilateral abandonment of the JCPOA has put Iran much closer to a nuclear bomb capability and made the world a more dangerous place. A restoration of the Iran Nuclear Deal will verifiably close off Iran’s pathways to a nuclear bomb through the most intrusive monitoring and inspections regime ever negotiated in a nonproliferation agreement.”

Senator Jeff Merkley (OR)

“The world was safer when the JCPOA was in place. The world became a much less safe place when President Trump tore up that agreement…We have an opportunity right now to reconstruct that agreement.”

Senator Chris Murphy (CT)

“When President Trump decided to withdraw from the JCPOA while Iran was in compliance was a major disaster for the United States. It allowed Iran to get very close to breakout for a nuclear weapon. We’re in a much more dangerous position now than we were when we were in the JCPOA…President Biden doesn’t have many options. If we don’t have an agreement, then we know that Iran – if it decides that it wants to produce a nuclear weapon — would be able to do it in a very short period of time and that’s not acceptable. I hope we can negotiate an agreement that is stronger and longer. I’ve been told that that’s not likely, so we’re just going to have to see how the negotiations take place. But it’s clear that we’re in a very, very bad situation because of President Trump.”

Senator Ben Cardin (MD)

House

“Returning to the Iran deal is our best path forward to rein in Iran’s nuclear program and secure a diplomatic solution. Congress should do everything to support [President Biden] & [Special Envoy for Iran Rob Malley] working to get this done.”

Rep. Ro Khanna (CA-17)

“As a member of [the House Foreign Affairs Committee], I’ve been clear that we need to reverse the harmful Trump admin Iran policies. We know that the Iran nuclear deal worked. It is the best option as we move towards building peace, constraining Iran’s nuclear capabilities & empowering Iranians.”

Rep. Andy Levin (MI-09)

“Hard to think of a more catastrophic policy failure than Trump’s withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal in favor of “maximum pressure”. Today, Iran is closer to a nuke than ever and behaving worse than ever.

But yeah, let’s listen to these guys.”

Rep. Jim Himes (CT-04)
